چکیده

A better understanding on natural climate variability is crucial for global climate change studies and the evaluation of the sensitivity of the climate system to perturbations. External forcing factors might contribute substantially to both high and low frequency variations in climate but a clear separation of their impact from internally forced fluctuations is difficult. We focus on solar irradiance variations and their influence on surface temperatures during the last four centuries. A statistical analysis based on wavelet decomposition is implemented to find common characteristics in both forcing and climate impact time series. By decomposing the small temporal scales from large ones through our wavelet analysis, a more meaningful description of solar forcing is proposed. In particular, the association between solar forcing and climate variability is critically assessed on the different time scales derived from the wavelet analysis.

A timescale analysis of the Northern Hemisphere temperature response to volcanic and solar forcing

The Northern Hemisphere temperature response to volcanic and solar forcing in the time interval 1000– 1850 AD is studied using first a set of simulations with an intermediate-complexity climate model, driven by reconstructed forcings. Results are then compared with those obtained from the seven high-resolution reconstructed temperature records for the last millenium that are at present availabl...

Corrigendum: Solar cycles or random processes? Evaluating solar variability in Holocene climate records

Many studies have reported evidence for solar-forcing of Holocene climate change across a range of archives. These studies have compared proxy-climate data with records of solar variability (e.g. (14)C or (10)Be), or have used time series analysis to test for the presence of solar-type cycles. This has led to some climate sceptics misrepresenting this literature to argue strongly that solar var...

Is there evidence for sunspot forcing of climate at multi-year and decadal periods?

[1] It has been proposed that solar cycle irradiance variations may affect the whole planet’s climate via the stratosphere, the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) and Arctic Oscillation (AO). We test this hypothesis by examining causal links between time series of sunspot number and indices of QBO, AO and ENSO activity. We use various methods: wavelet coherence, average mutual information, and me...

Global analysis of radiative forcing from fire-induced shortwave albedo change

Land surface albedo, a key parameter to derive Earth’s surface energy balance, is used in the parameterization of numerical weather prediction, climate monitoring and climate change impact assessments. Changes in albedo due to fire have not been fully investigated on a continental and global scale. The main goal of this study, therefore, is to quantify the changes in instantaneous shortwave alb...

Evidence from Wavelet Lag Coherence for Negligible Solar Forcing of Climate at Multi-year and Decadal Periods

We examine possible links between solar cycle irradiance variations the large atmospheric circulation systems that affect whole planet’s climate. In particular we examine the putative mechanism of solar forcing mediated by changes in induced stratospheric conditions over the polar regions. We test this hypothesis by examining causal links between time series of solar irradiance based on both am...
